WATERLOO REGION — Public health reported 98 COVID-19 cases over the weekend.

The Sunday update put the total number of confirmed cases at 15,930, including 39 cases reported Sunday.

Variants of concern cases increased by 83 to 3,209 from Friday to Sunday.

Another case of the B.1.617 variant first detected in India was reported Sunday, for a total of nine. The first four local cases were reported by public health just this past Wednesday.

Four variants of concern have been detected in the region. The vast majority are the B.1.1.7 variant first detected in the U.K.

The Sunday dashboard update reported 339 active cases, down 22 from the previous day.

Hospitalizations remained steady at 23, including 12 people in intensive care. On Friday, there were 28 COVID-19 patients hospitalized.

Deaths remained unchanged at 256.

Outbreaks went down by one to nine in the Sunday update. That’s compared to eight on Friday.

Six outbreaks are in workplaces.

An outbreak declared Friday at Wilfrid Laurier University is connected to two cases. A post Saturday on the university’s website confirmed two employees on the Waterloo campus tested positive for COVID-19. They are in self-isolation and being monitored by public health.

“The university is taking direction about the management of this outbreak from public health, including supporting the contact tracing and isolation of individuals as required. Anyone who has been deemed a close contact with these cases has already been notified and is self-isolating,” the post read.

Vaccination milestone

Grand River Hospital reported on Saturday that its team reached the milestone of giving 100,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Kitchener hospital hosted the region’s first immunization clinic in its basement starting last December before expanding to mobile clinics and the region’s largest mass vaccination site on Pinebush Road in Cambridge.

The hospital said in a tweet: “Thanks to our team and our amazing community for rolling up your sleeves to make this milestone possible!”

The Grand River team’s total doses is equal to almost a third of all the vaccine doses given to regional residents. Friday’s vaccination dashboard update put the total number of doses administered to local residents at 298,861.
