Case of highly contagious disease measles found in Saskatoon - Saskatoon Star-Phoenix

A case of the highly contagious disease measles has been identified in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) said in a news release on Friday that one case of measles had been confirmed in a Saskatoon resident who had travelled overseas. Measles is a nationally notifiable disease in Canada.

Symptoms of measles can include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, fatigue, and irritability. Small, white spots form inside the mouth and throat, and a red blotchy rash develops on the face and spreads down the body about three to seven days after symptoms begin. The rash can last four to seven days.

Anyone who was at of the following locations during the listed times should monitor for these symptoms.

When: Sunday, Jan. 7 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Where: Reitman’s in Stonebridge (3011 Clarence Avenue S), Dollarama in Stonebridge (3011 Clarence Avenue S), Walmart in Stonebridge (3035 Clarence Avenue S)

When: Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: 1st floor Arts Building Café at University of Saskatchewan (9 Campus Drive)

When: Tuesday, Jan. 16 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Where: Royal University Hospital adult emergency waiting room

If anyone has any symptoms and was also at any of the listed locations during the identified times, SHA said they should wear a mask and call 811 for directions. If anyone is in medical distress, they recommend going to an emergency room or calling 911, while also identifying a possible measles exposure.

Anyone who was potentially exposed at RUH emergency may also be eligible for pre-emptive treatment, SHA said, if they were born in 1964 or later and have not received two doses of measles vaccine — measles-rubella (MR), measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and/or measles-mumps-Germana-varicella (MMRV).

Those eligible are asked to attend a clinic at Northeast Health Centre at 407 Ludlow Street on Jan. 20 or Jan. 21 between 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. No appointment is required.
