Saskatchewan Witnesses Declining COVID-19 Cases Amid Rising Flu Concerns
In a promising turn of events, Saskatchewan is witnessing a steady decline in its COVID-19 caseload for the fifth consecutive week. The province reported a decrease in detected cases from 307 to 262 in the early weeks of December, marking a significant stride in its battle against the pandemic. The cumulative COVID-19 death toll in the region rose marginally by one, tallying to 2,028 since the pandemic’s onset.
Diminishing Hospitalizations
Parallel to the decline in COVID-19 cases, the province has also reported a decrease in hospitalizations. The number dipped from 90 to 56, with ICU admissions also witnessing a slight drop from 7 to 6. The number of COVID-19 outbreaks in Saskatchewan has likewise seen a reduction, adding to the province’s positive health trajectory.
Influenza Emerges as New Health Concern
While the province grapples with COVID-19, influenza has emerged as a significant health concern. Despite a general decline in flu cases, 13 new influenza-related fatalities have been reported in the same two-week span. Hospital and ICU admissions due to the flu have slightly decreased, but Influenza A continues to be the most prevalent strain detected. The test-positivity rate for influenza has declined, yet it remains high at 25.2%.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Cases on the Rise
The province has also reported a slight uptick in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases. Health officials are monitoring this trend closely as RSV can cause severe illness, particularly in infants and older adults. This comes at a time when emergency department visits for respiratory-related illnesses have witnessed a decline.
As Saskatchewan navigates these health concerns, officials are emphasizing the importance of getting vaccinated for both flu and COVID-19. With the ongoing pandemic and the flu season at its peak, staying up-to-date with vaccinations could be crucial in mitigating the spread of infections.
