Risk of COVID hospitalization rises for unvaccinated or one-dose individuals, say provincial statistics - Sudbury.com

The Sudbury Health Unit issued a summary of statistics this week that reports people with only one COVID-19 vaccine shot, or no shot at all, have a much higher risk - almost five times - of being admitted to an intensive care unit than those with two vaccinations or those who have the third booster shot.

The numbers were part of the Public Health Sudbury and Districts’ (PHSD) weekly summary issued Thursday afternoon.

The summary provides a breakdown of local COVID case trends, the number of COVID-19 outbreaks, the number of new cases, the number of older cases that are resolved and the increase in the number of local COVID-related deaths.

In one part of the report, a mention is made of the recent Ontario data for the period of Dec. 16, 2021 through to Jan. 14, 2022.

"The risk of an individual who is unvaccinated, or who only has one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, being admitted to hospital due to COVID-19 was two times that of someone with two or more doses," said the summary.

"Further, their risk of currently being admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) was 3.4 times that of someone with two doses, and 4.9 times that of someone with three doses," the summary added.

Further to that, PHSD reported that in the past seven days (ending on Feb. 2) 618 new COVID cases were reported, while at the same time, 706 older known cases were resolved.

PHSD noted that the number of free PCR tests has been limited to people who are high risk cases.

"Counts of new and active cases therefore underestimate the true number of people with COVID-19 in Sudbury and districts," said the PHSD summary.

In other recent local trends, PHSD reported that as of Tuesday, Feb. 1, there were 58 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in local hospitals; 25 of which had been admitted due to COVID; 11 of these patients were in the intensive care unit (ICU), five of which were on a ventilator.

In terms of vaccination levels, PHSD reported that 91.2 per cent of local residents aged 12 and older have received one dose of vaccine, compared to 91.9 per cent for all Ontario residents aged 12 and older. Second doses have been received by 88.4 per cent of those aged 12 and older in Sudbury and districts compared to 89.3 per cent for all Ontario residents aged 12 and older.

The percentage drops a bit for Sudbury and district residents aged five and older, which is 88.4 per cent for one dose and 83 per cent for two doses.

A full breakdown with the newest statistics is available online at the PHSD website.
