Ontario reports highest daily COVID-19 case count since May 30 - TheRecord.com

Ontario is reporting its highest daily increase in COVID-19 cases in three months as the numbers continue to creep higher amid urgent calls by public health officials for residents who haven’t had the shot to get vaccinated.

The province is reporting another 944 cases and nine more deaths, according to its latest report released Saturday morning. It’s the highest number of infections since May 30.

Five of the nine deaths occurred more than two months ago, and the reporting was delayed due to a data cleanup, the province says.

Ontario has administered 45,886 vaccine doses since its last daily update, with 20,917,550 vaccines given in total as of 8 p.m. Friday.

According to the Star’s vaccine tracker, 10,886,547 people in Ontario have received at least one shot. That works out to approximately 83.5 per cent of the eligible population 12 years and older, and the equivalent of 73.2 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province says 10,031,003 people have completed their vaccinations, which means they’ve had both doses. That works out to approximately 77.0 per cent of the eligible population 12 years and older, and the equivalent of 67.5 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province is now including new data that reflects hospitalizations and cases by vaccination status. Ontario is warning that the new process may cause discrepancies between other hospitalization numbers being collected using a different process, and that the data may not match daily COVID-19 case counts.

The province’s new data reports 559 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in unvaccinated people, 92 were partially vaccinated, and 208 cases in fully vaccinated people. Again, the province warns the data may not match daily COVID case counts because records with a missing or invalid health card number can’t be linked.

“Vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from #COVID19 and the Delta variant,” Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted. “If you haven’t received your 1st or 2nd dose, it’s not too late.”

The province says 26,259 tests were completed the previous day, and a 3.5 per cent positivity rate.

There are 309 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 149 patients in intensive care testing positive for COVID-19. There are 97 people on ventilators.

Meanwhile, one more resident in long-term care has died for a total of 3,795 since the pandemic began, in the latest report released by the province.

Ontario is reporting two more long-term-care homes in outbreak, for a total of eight or 33 per cent of LTC homes in the province.

This data is self-reported by the long-term care homes to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Daily case and death figures may not immediately match the numbers posted by the local public health units due to lags in reporting time.

There are 146,429 confirmed cases in Ontario of the Alpha variant first detected in the United Kingdom, an increase of 1 from the previous day.

There are 1,501 cases in Ontario of the Beta variant first detected in South Africa.

There are 5,222 cases of the Gamma variant first found in Brazil.

There are 11,835 cases of the Delta variant first detected in India, an increase of 516 from the previous day.
