Ontario is reporting 857 new COVID-19 cases, with 499 cases confirmed in unvaccinated people - Toronto Star

Ontario is reporting another 857 COVID-19 cases and 15 more deaths, according to its latest report released Saturday morning.

Ontario has administered 40,220 vaccine doses since its last daily update, with 21,138,345 vaccines given in total as of 8 p.m. Friday night.

According to the Star’s vaccine tracker, 10,985,708 people in Ontario have received at least one shot. That works out to approximately 84.3 per cent of the eligible population 12 years and older, and the equivalent of 73.9 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province says 10,152,637 people have completed their vaccinations, which means they’ve had both doses. That works out to approximately 77.9 per cent of the eligible population 12 years and older, and the equivalent of 68.3 per cent of the total population, including those not yet eligible for the vaccine.

The province is now including new data that reflects hospitalizations and cases by vaccination status. Ontario is warning that the new process may cause discrepancies with other hospitalization numbers being collected using a different process, and that the data may not match daily COVID-19 case counts.

The province’s new data reports 499 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in unvaccinated people, 80 were partially vaccinated and 211 cases were in fully vaccinated people. Again, the province warns the data may not match daily COVID case counts because records with a missing or invalid health card number can’t be linked.

Ontario is reporting 34.5 weekly COVID cases per 100,000.

The province says 26,268 tests were completed the previous day, with a 3.5 per cent positivity rate.

There are 363 people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the province, including 154 patients in intensive care testing positive for COVID-19. There are 94 people on ventilators.

Locally, Health Minister Christine Elliott says 170 cases are in Toronto, 100 in Peel Region and 77 in York Region.

Meanwhile, the province is reporting that there are no new deaths in long-term care so the number of residents who have died stays the same at 3,804, in the latest report released by the province.

Ontario is reporting no more long-term-care homes in outbreak, for a total of seven or 1.1 per cent of LTC homes in the province.

This data is self-reported by the long-term-care home to the Ministry of Long-Term Care. Daily case and death figures may not immediately match the numbers posted by the local public health units due to lags in reporting time.

There are 146,448 confirmed cases in Ontario of the Alpha variant first detected in the United Kingdom, an increase of four from the previous day.

There are 1,501 cases in Ontario of the Beta variant first detected in South Africa, with no new cases reported than the previous day.

There are 5,225 cases of the Gamma variant first found in Brazil, with no new cases reported from the previous day.

There are 14,139 cases of the Delta variant first detected in India, an increase of 88 from the previous day.
