The Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association is backing up the call for mandatory vaccinations for all health care workers in the province.
Premier Andrew Furey yesterday announced that the province is participating in consultations with public sector unions toward the introduction of a vaccination mandate for public sector workers.
The Delta variant is fueling a surge in cases in the province and across the country, and is prompting Public Health officials to boost the province’s vaccination rate goal to 90 per cent.
The NLMA says its position is the same as other national and provincial health care organizations that have called for mandatory vaccines for health care workers.
President Dr. Susan MacDonald says health care workers have direct contact with vulnerable populations who are at higher risk of severe illness. All health care workers have a duty she says to help reduce the risks to patient and workplace safety.
