Manitoba marks 54 new COVID-19 cases, one death - Winnipeg Free Press

Manitoba has announced 54 new cases of COVID-19, and the death of a Winnipeg man in his 80s after being infected with the delta variant.

It marks the seventh COVID-19 fatality reported by the province this week.

Data updated Thursday show there have been 106 new cases of the virus detected since Sept. 7 (52 Wednesday and 54 Thursday).

The provincewide test positivity rate was 2.6 per cent; in Winnipeg, it was 1.4 per cent. The test positivity rates for parts of the province that have smaller populations are not being released, including the Southern Health region, which has the lowest vaccination uptake in Manitoba.

There are a total of 456 active COVID-19 cases in Manitoba, and 77 of those people are currently hospitalized.

About 65 per cent of Thursday's cases — 35 out of 54 — were among Manitobans who weren't fully vaccinated. The province has released a breakdown by region, showing high proportions of the new cases are among unvaccinated Manitobans in all areas of the province.

The province reported:

• eight new cases, with seven not fully vaccinated, in Interlake-Eastern;

• seven new cases, with four not fully vaccinated, in Northern Health;

• two new cases, with two not fully vaccinated, in Prairie Mountain;

• 16 new cases, with 12 not fully vaccinated, in Southern Health;

• 21 new cases, with 10 not fully vaccinated, in Winnipeg.

The Manitoba government also provided an update on ongoing public health order enforcement efforts.

A total of 56 warnings and three tickets were issued Aug. 23 to Sept. 5, including: one $1,296 ticket to individuals; one $5,000 ticket to businesses; and one $8,550 ticket to an individual for violating the Federal Quarantine Act.
