B.C. health officials report 44 new COVID-19 cases on Vancouver Island - CHEK

British Columbia health officials are reporting 671 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Friday, with 44 linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 539 active COVID-19 cases.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 215 are in hospital with 118 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 5,872 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Thursday’s numbers, there have been 78 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 230 in the Fraser Health region, 44 in the Island Health region, 230 in the Interior Health region, 89 in the Northern Health region and no cases for people who reside outside of Canada.

There were three additional deaths related to the virus on Friday. All deaths occurred in the Interior Health region, according to the Province.

This brings the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 1,827.

Also as of Friday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 167,654.

As for the Province’s total vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 7,509,127 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 85.4 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 84.8 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 78.1 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 3,376,103 residents.

Also on Thursday, Dr. Bonnie Henry announced that new COVID-19 restrictions would be implemented in the Northern Health region due to rising case numbers.

B.C. is now limiting only one family is allowed to visit a residence at one time with a max of five guests and outdoor gatherings will be limited to a max of 50 people.
