The Aug. 29 dashboard report from Region of Waterloo Public Health shows 161 active cases of the virus, with a total of 18,466 cases resolved.

There were 17 new positive cases of the virus reported for a total of 18,920 positive cases of COVID-19 in the region, 7 of which are currently hospitalized. Among the cases currently hospitalized in the region for the virus, 6 have entered an intensive-care unit.

There are 5,047 cases of a variant identified in Waterloo region, with 3,126 cases of the Alpha (first detected in the U.K.), 21 cases of Beta (first detected in South Africa), 1,540 cases of Delta (first detected in India) and 98 cases of Gamma (first detected in Brazil).

There have been a total of 565,830 COVID-19 tests administered (updated on Tuesday and Friday).

289 deaths have been reported of those testing positive with the virus.

An outbreaks ended at a food processing workplace (10 cases).

The total number of outbreaks in the region is now 5, with the breakdown as follows:

LTC/RH: 1

School: 0

University: 0

Workplace: 2

Transmission of the virus is the highest in the region in close contact cases, where 8,815 have been reported.

In the rest of the cases, 5,725 were acquired through community transmission, 3,970 cases were acquired through outbreak, 398 cases acquired COVID-19 while travelling.

The highest number of cases in Waterloo region is in adults in their 20s with 4,644. People in their 30s represent 3,143 of the cases, while those in their 40s make up 2,533 of the region's cases. 1,081 kids under the age of nine have tested positive, and 1,998 between the age of 10 and 19.

Just over six per cent of cases to date, 1,049 in total, are among health-care workers.

The region does not report the age, gender, transmission route and testing site of individual cases, as well as negative tests.

New cases will be added daily.
