Orlondo Steinauer could go from coach of the year to no longer here in Hamilton, if oddsmakers are to be believed.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ 0-2 start to the COVID-19-compressed Canadian Football League season has led the online gambling company Bodog making Steinauer the betting favourite to be the first coach fired this season. Steinauer is listed at +200, the equivalent of 2-to-1 odds, to be the first coach to be fired this season.
The Tiger-Cats had the best regular-season record in the CFL in 2019, and the franchise is hosting the Grey Cup in December, which will mark the first time it has been played since Tim Hortons Field was rebuilt. However, the Tiger-Cats have been outscored 49-14 in road defeats against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Saskatchewan Roughriders, who appear to be the league’s two strongest teams.
They will remain on the road next week with a contest against the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 27. Alouettes head coach Khari Jones is the second favourite in the first-coach-fired prop at at +250, or 5-to-2 odds.
The betting board is slanted toward the East Division. The Ottawa Redblacks’ Paul LaPolice is listed at +300 and the Toronto Argonauts’ Ryan Dinwiddie is listed at +500.
The rest of the board includes the B.C. Lions’ Rick Campbell (+750), Edmonton Elks’ Jaime Elizondo (also +750), Calgary Stampeders’ Dave Dickenson (+1200), Winnipeg’s Michael O’Shea (+1200) and Saskatchewan’s Craig Dickenson (also +1200).
After shutting down in 2020, the CFL has returned with a 14-game regular season, rather than the traditional 18. That might leave teams with less margin for error and more urgency to make a playoff push.
Teams in the East have also started the season on the road, since provincial approval to host games with fans came later in Ontario than in British Columbia and the Prairie provinces.
After the Montreal game, the Tiger-Cats’ Their home opener is on Sept. 6 against Toronto in the traditional Labour Day Classic at Tim Hortons Field.
