Wednesday was the 10th straight day fewer than 100 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Alberta. New, active, and serious cases of the novel coronavirus continue on the decline across the province as Alberta moves to lift nearly all pandemic restrictions on July 1.

Alberta’s active cases dropped to 1,055 by Wednesday, down 77 from the previous day. Of these, 158 were in the Edmonton region while 565 were in Calgary area. Hospitalizations dropped by five to 165 provincewide, including 34 people in ICU. Variant cases of COVID-19 make up about 68 per cent of Alberta’s active cases — 66 more variant cases were found.

During her final regularly-scheduled COVID-19 update on Tuesday, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said the worst of the pandemic is behind us, though she cautioned Albertans COVID-19 is still here, and to remember to take reasonable precautions.

Cases down, vaccines up

Declining cases come as more Albertans are protected from the disease by vaccines.

More than 4.3 million COVID-19 jabs have been given out in Alberta. Provincewide, 72.8 per cent of Albertans 12 and older have had one jab while 42.4 per cent of this age group are fully immunized.

Moderna and Pfizer’s vaccines have been shown to be very effective in protecting Albertans from both the wild and variant strains of COVID-19, according to provincial data. No information on AstraZeneca was available.

Moderna’s vaccines have been found to be about 82 per cent effective in preventing COVID-19 after a single jab while Pfizer’s has been about 73 per cent effective after just one dose. After two shots, this increases to 93 per cent for Moderna and about 90 per cent for Pfizer.

After just one dose, vaccines have been about 73 per cent effective against the Alpha variant, first identified in the U.K., and about 91 per cent effective after two doses. Similarly, one shot is about 75 per cent effective against the Gamma variant, first found in Brazil, and about 89 per cent effective after two.

Since January, the vast majority of new cases, severe disease, and deaths from COVID-19 have been in unvaccinated people.
