Vast majority of Canadians want vaccinations ASAP, according to Angus Reid poll - Toronto Star

Close to 90 per cent Canadians now want a dose of COVID-19 vaccine, according to a new poll from Angus Reid.

The poll results suggest Canadians are now the least fearful they have been since last summer of getting COVID-19.

The poll also indicates that most Canadians, about 70 per cent, want vaccine doses to go to domestic vaccination programs first, as demand for vaccines is higher than ever. The results come on the heels of a government announcement to donate 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccine abroad, including 13 million the government deemed as surplus.

A total of 88 per cent of Canadians said they wanted a vaccine dose when polled in June, the most recent iteration of a poll that has been taking place since January. In the January polls, 78 per cent of people said they would get vaccinated, with about 40 per cent of that group saying they would get a dose “eventually, but would wait.”

In June, 84 per cent of respondents said they wanted a dose “ASAP, or have already received at least one dose.”

In the United Kingdom, where a summit of G7 leaders is taking place, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said some of the 13 million doses pledged for donation would be sent immediately to countries that need it most, and others will come later, as more Canadians get vaccinated.

“We’re going to be able to share around the world as we see Canadians getting vaccinated to higher and higher levels, and we simply do not need those doses,” he said.

Seventy-two per cent of respondents to the Angus Reid poll said that, if it was up to them, Canada should “finish vaccinating everyone who wants a vaccine at home” instead of shifting “efforts to focus on at-risk people globally.”

The poll was conducted online with 4,948 Canadian adults and a likely margin of error of two percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

The percentage of people who don’t want to be vaccinated or are unsure is highest in Alberta and Saskatchewan, at 18 per cent each, but this number has dropped from a higher rate when asked the same question in January.
