Toronto opening tens of thousands of new appointments for Moderna vaccines for next week - Toronto Star

Toronto is opening 30,000 new COVID-19 vaccine appointments for next week at city-run immunization clinics.

The Moderna vaccine appointments for eligible adults will go live in the provincial booking system “later today,” the city said in a news release Friday morning. No exact time was given.

Then, on Monday, another 60,000 Moderna appointments for eligible adults will open for the week starting June 28.

The new blocks of appointments are among several that have opened recently thanks to large new supplies of Moderna flowing into Canada, augmenting shipments of the other approved mRNA-technology vaccine, Pfizer.

Moderna is not authorized children aged 12 to 17. Parents can make appointments for those children for Pfizer vaccine through the provincial booking system.

Appointments at City-run clinics can be booked through the dark blue “Book a Vaccine” button at http://www.toronto.ca/covid-19 or by calling the provincial vaccine booking line at 1-833-943-3900.

The Moderna appointments follow new advice Thursday from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization that mRNA vaccines are the preferred second doses for anyone who got AstraZeneca vaccine for their shot.

The extra vaccine is helping Ontario’s push to get as many people fully immunized as quickly as possible to give them maximum protection from the highly contagious Delta COVID-19 variant.

Spread of Delta among unvaccinated or partially vaccinated people could threaten to reverse rapidly falling COVID-19 levels and Ontario’s reopening plans set to see hair stylists and other businesses allowed to open in Stage 2 starting around July 2.

Ontario on Thursday declared three more Delta hot spots — Hamilton, Durham and Simcoe-Muskoka — in addition to others including Toronto and Peel Region where there is wider eligibility for second doses.

The extra Toronto appointments will see the nine city-run clinics ramp up to 125,000 doses per week. People are also getting vaccinated at participating pharmacies and at clinics operated by hospitals and health partners, including ones this week that have seen massive lineups of people eager to get second doses.

On CP24 Friday morning, Mayor John Tory urged Torontonians to take advantage of the appointments for Moderna which, the city is noting, is extremely similar to Pfizer.

But Tory, who got AstraZeneca for his first shot and had planned to get it for his second shot as well, said he is now not sure what he’ll do given that federal health authorities are recommending Pfizer or Moderna for second doses.

He said he plans to consult a medical expert and then decide if he’ll go back to a pharmacy for AstraZeneca or make an appointment at a city-run clinic for an mRNA vaccine.
