Second dose eligibility expanded in Manitoba - Winnipeg Sun

Article content

The province’s eligibility for second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine was expanded once again on Friday.

Anyone who received their first shot on or before April 25 is now eligible to receive their second jab. This includes anyone who received the Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca shots.

It’s the fourth expansion to the second-dose campaign since Monday, when it was extended to April 9, followed by April 13 and then April 20 on Wednesday.

All Indigenous people ages 12 and up in Manitoba can also book second dose appointments as long as they meet the minimum time interval between doses.

Those intervals include a 21-day period for Pfizer, a 28-day period for Moderna and a minimum 28-day period for the AstraZeneca serum. The province recommends that those who received AstraZeneca as their first jab wait between eight and 12 weeks for optimal efficacy.

On Monday, the province pivoted to a dose-mixing strategy for those who received AstraZeneca as their first dose. Those people can now receive either of the mRNA (Pfizer or Moderna) vaccines as their second dose.

The remaining doses of viral vector AstraZeneca vaccine in the province, which totalled around 1,900 as of Wednesday, are being held for those who cannot receive an mRNA vaccine due to medical issues, such as severe allergies.

The province has asked the federal government not to send any more AstraZeneca doses to Manitoba, a decision that could be re-visited in the future if the vaccine implementation task force is seeing refusing an alternative second dose.

Second-dose appointments can be booked online or over the phone at 1-844-626-8222.
