Region adds 32 new COVID cases Wednesday, now over 16K since start of pandemic - KitchenerToday.com

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Waterloo Region remain stable. 32 were added to the region's summary dashboard on Wednesday. That compares with 33 on Tuesday.

There have been 16,026 local cases since the start of the pandemic.

The active caseload has dropped to 307.

17 people are being treated for the virus in hospital --- 11 are in intensive care (It does not include ICU data for Grand River Hospital. The hospital and Ministry of Health are working to resolve the issue).

Over 324,000 residents of Waterloo Region (18+) have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which works out to over 63 per cent. Over 22,000 residents (4.75 per cent) have been fully vaccinated.

Here are some other updates from the region's dashboard: 

  • 3,270 cases have screened positive for variants of concern - 2,884 are the U.K. strain - six are linked to the variant first detected in South Africa - 12 are linked to the strain first found in India - 27 are linked to the strain first found in Brazil - 341 cases where a mutation has been detected
  • The local death toll remains at 256. No new deaths were reported Wednesday
  • 15,452 resolved cases (96 per cent)
  • Over 495,000 tests have been done

There are currently six active outbreaks in the region. Four are in workplaces:

  • Wilfrid Laurier University (two cases)
  • Food and beverage services 18 (two cases)
  • Construction 15 (three cases)
  • Farm 2 (13 cases)
  • Forest Heights long-term care - Hewson Unit (two cases in residents, five in staff)
  • Manufacturing/industrial 17 (30 cases)

Meantime, the province reported 733 cases on Wednesday.

The rest of the provincial COVID-19 totals are posted below:

  • 781,163 vaccinations have been completed - 9.34 million doses have been administered
  • 532,891 total cases
  • 513,436 resolved cases
  • 708 people are in hospital - 576 are in intensive care - 399 are on a ventilator
  • 8,791 deaths (25 new)
  • 31,768 tests completed Tuesday - 15.27 million since January 15, 2020
