Alberta Health Service (AHS) is accepting critical care patients from Manitoba’s hospitals as that province’s health system struggles with a third COVID-19 wave.
In a Wednesday statement, AHS said up to 10 intensive care patients will be transferred to hospitals in Edmonton or Calgary. While Alberta’s hospitalizations have been falling, Manitoba’s hospitals are expected to see COVID-19 patient numbers peak next week.
“With our hospitalizations falling in line with the recent trend in cases, we have available capacity to help our neighbours,” said Health Minister Tyler Shandro in a statement.
“The staff and physicians in our hospitals and across our health system have worked hard to meet the needs of patients throughout the pandemic. I know they are tired, but I also know how deeply committed they are to caring for patients and I know they will come through again.”
AHS reported on Wednesday that Alberta had 435 patients in hospital with COVID-19, including 122 people in ICUs. This is down from a peak of approximately 729 patients three weeks ago. COVID-19 patients in ICUs peaked two weeks ago with 187 patients.

COVID-19 patient numbers have also dropped at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre (NLRHC). Alberta Health spokesperson Kerry Williamson said there are 12 COVID-19 patients at Fort McMurray’s hospital. There are seven patients in the ICU, most of whom have COVID-19.
The hospital peaked with 44 COVID-19 patients in early May, including 11 COVID-19 patients in the ICU. The hospital has 122 acute care beds and 11 ICU beds, an increase of 15 and five beds respectively.
Since May 24, seven ICU patients have been sent to Edmonton hospitals. Dozens of local ICU patients have been transferred to Edmonton during the third wave, either because of capacity issues or patients needed specialized care not available locally.
