WATERLOO REGION — Waterloo Region is reporting another 59 COVID-19 cases.

The Saturday update by public health put the total number of cases at 15,891.

Variants of concern cases increased by 40 to 3,166.

Eight cases of the B.1.617 variant first detected in India are now confirmed. That comes just days after the first four local cases were reported by public health on Wednesday, with three of the cases linked to international travel. Another was reported Friday.

Four variants of concern have been detected in the region. The vast majority are the B.1.1.7 variant first detected in the U.K.

Active cases dropped by 13 to 361.

Hospitalizations went down by five to 23, including 12 people in intensive care.

Outbreaks increased by two to 10, including seven in workplaces.

An outbreak declared at Wilfrid Laurier University on Friday is connected to two cases. A post Saturday on the university’s website confirmed two employees on the Waterloo campus tested positive for COVID-19. They are in self-isolation and being monitored by public health.

“The university is taking direction about the management of this outbreak from public health, including supporting the contact tracing and isolation of individuals as required. Anyone who has been deemed a close contact with these cases has already been notified and is self-isolating,” the post read.

Deaths remained at 256.

Vaccination milestone

Grand River Hospital reported on Saturday that its team reached the milestone of giving 100,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Kitchener hospital hosted the region’s first immunization clinic in its basement before expanding to mobile clinics and the region’s largest mass vaccination site on Pinebush Road in Cambridge.
