Premier Iain Rankin is asking Nova Scotians to celebrate their mothers this weekend from their hearts but from a distance.
"To all the mothers out there," Rankin said at Friday's COVID-19 briefing. "I know this is not the Mother's Day that you were hoping for, and I'm sorry for that. It will be difficult not to see your children and loved ones, but I hope that you can understand we're trying to protect you."
As Nova Scotia continues to see high numbers of COVID-19 cases, the province has tightened restrictions in an attempt to curb a third wave of the virus.
Nova Scotia is on its eleventh day of a province-wide lockdown which began April 28 and was set to end May 12.
Haligonians are urged to avoid leaving their communities unless essential. For instance, Rankin said people in Timberlea shouldn't be going to downtown Halifax, and people in Dartmouth should stay on that side of the bridge.
Starting Monday, May 10 at 8 a.m., Nova Scotia's border will close to all non-essential travel.
An application process will be introduced by May 14 for most travellers. The new border rules will remain in place until the end of the month.
"Celebrate your mom from your heart but from a distance," Rankin said. "This is a crucial weekend and we need you now more than ever to follow these restrictions. Dr. Strang and I want you to have a good weekend, but please stay close to home."
At the May 6 COVID-19 briefing, Rankin said Nova Scotians should contact their mothers through virtual apps or through phone as COVID-19 restrictions could get tougher.
Today, May 8, the province reported 163 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death.
The province also reported 1,538 active cases of COVID-19.
