Newfoundland and Labrador reports nine new COVID-19 cases Saturday, May 29, but none tied to central outbreak | Saltwire - SaltWire Network

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador reported nine new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, with none of them connected to the recent outbreak in the central part of the province.

In its latest daily COVID-19 update, the Department of Health and Community Services confirmed there is one new case in the Central Health region involving a man in his 50s, but it is related to travel within Canada.

Two of Saturday's cases are in the Eastern Health region, both males between 20-39 and both related to travel within Canada.

Six cases are in the Western Health region -- two males under 20, two females under 20, one female between 20-39 and a man in his 60s. All are close contacts of a previously confirmed case.

While there were no new confirmed cases related to the central cluster, there is one new presumptive case tied to the outbreak. However, since presumptive cases are not part of any official total until confirmed, the case count associated with the cluster stays at 60.

There are also five presumptive positive cases in the Western Health region, all connected to a positive case reported Friday.

Two other cases remain under investigation, — a case reported Thursday in the Western Health region and another from a week earlier in Central Health.

With five new recoveries — two in central and one in the western region — the overall provincial count of confirmed cases stands at an even 100.

The breakdown by region:

  • 66 in the Central Health region
  • 17 in the Eastern Health region
  • 17 in the Western Health
  • 1 in the Labrador-Grenfell Health region

Four people in the province are hospitalized with COVID-19. That's one less than listed in Friday's update.
