Nearly $500 million of that windfall is bound for large airports to put toward critical infrastructure such as runway repairs and
transit stations.
Most of the rest is en route to smaller airports, whose definition has been loosened temporarily to allow eight more sites
to apply, from Prince George, B.C., to Gander, Nfld.
The government previously announced $435 million roughly evenly split between airport rent relief and support for regional air
transportation.
The aviation industry has been among the hardest-hit sectors during the COVID-19 pandemic, with profits and passenger numbers plummeting amid travel restrictions and border shutdowns.

12 a.m. – WHO declares mutant virus now in B.C. is a variant of concern
A fast-spreading strain of COVID-19 first identified in India and already in B.C. has been classified as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization.
This means there are now four variants of concern circulating in B.C.
“There is some available information to suggest increased transmissibility,” a WHO spokesperson said at a media briefing Monday, referring to the B.1.617 mutation that is ravaging India.
“A study of a limited number of patients that has not undergone peer review also suggested that the mutant can evade some key antibodies. As such, we’re classifying this as a variant of concern at the global level.”
