B.C. health officials reported 289 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, marking the second straight day — and only the second time in 2021 — that the province has posted a daily case count under 300.

While cases are dwindling, vaccination numbers continue to rise in B.C.

The province has now delivered 2,927,487 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to adults 18 and over, including 148,580 second doses. Nearly 65 per cent of all B.C. adults — or almost 60 per cent of those 12 and older — have received at least one dose of vaccine.

The good-news numbers came on the same day that Premier John Horgan announced the lifting of some COVID-19 restrictions and outlined the province’s reopening plan.

“As cases continue to decline and immunizations steadily rise, we are moving forward with purpose, monitoring our progress to ensure we remain on track,” B.C.’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and B.C. Health Ministry Adrian Dix said in joint statement.

A single death was recorded between Monday and Tuesday, which raised B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll to 1,680.

Since the start of the pandemic, 142,636 people in British Columbia have tested positive for COVID-19, of which 137,062 have recovered.

There are 3,782 active cases in the province including 301 hospitalizations. There are 93 people with COVID-19 being treated in intensive care, which is the lowest total since early April.

Also Tuesday, Vancouver police revealed they broke up a weekend party at a downtown apartment where officers issued more than $11,000 in fines to the revellers for allegedly violating public health orders banning social gatherings inside a residence.

The VPD paid visit to the suite at 1200 West Georgia around 1 a.m. Sunday after receiving several noise complaints.

After the host refused to open the door, the police returned with a search warrant and got inside.

“We have made it very clear that we will not tolerate incidents where people deliberately contravene the public health orders set out by the province,” said VPD Const. Tania Visintin. “When someone blatantly ignores the law and puts others at risk of contracting COVID-19, we will use our legal avenues to hold them accountable.”

The party host was issued a $2,300 violation ticket for organizing a non-compliant event, while the 16 other partiers were each issued fines of $575 for attending a non-compliant event.

“Additionally, four speakers, a turntable and various cables were seized as evidence,” said Visintin.
