A 'wake up call' as province says one COVID-19 ICU patient is in their 20s - HalifaxToday.ca

Nova Scotia's chief medical officer of health is warning younger residents that they are also at risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

On Monday, the province registered 66 new cases, for a total of 323 active cases.

Five people in the province are currently in hospital with the disease, two of those are in ICU.

Speaking at Monday's briefing, Dr. Robert Strang said one of those ICU patients is a person in their 20s.

"COVID-19 can have devastating effects for anyone and the variants do not discriminate by age," explained Strang. "We have seen this across the country, this third wave, significant increase in young people with severe illness and hospitalizations in ICUs."

Premier Iain Rankin said this is a "wake up call" for young adults in the province.

"You are not invincible," he said. "You need to take this virus and the variants seriously."

Strang is asking Nova Scotians to be at their best by hunkering down close to home as much as possible, getting tested and reducing contacts.

As of last week, HRM and surrounding areas are under heavy restrictions due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

On Monday, the province announced all public school students in the affected area will move to at-home learning.
